Track & Field Season Recap

The Colby-Sawyer indoor and outdoor track and field teams continued to showcase its talent throughout New England in 2017-18. The indoor season saw five women's records set, while the men broke two records. In the outdoor season, the men and the women set two records apiece.

Colby-Sawyer sent eight women to Springfield and six men to Middlebury to compete at this year's New England Indoor Championships.

The 4x800 relay team of freshman Amanda Boyd (Dedham, Maine), freshman Avery Brennan (Belgrade, Maine), senior Lauren Oligny (Plaistow, N.H.) and sophomore Alison Fairbairn (Dover, N.H.) came away with a school record time of 10:21.76 to beat the previous record by 12 seconds. The team finished 15th.

Senior Karl Nyholm (Concord, Mass.) earned All-New England honors for placing fourth in the shot put. He posted a distance of 15.19 meters.

Senior Curtis Warren (Morrill, Maine) finished 16th in the pole vault with a season best height of 4.36 meters, which is also the second best mark ever, second only to his school record of 4.40 meters.

The distance medley relay team of junior Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England), junior Kyle Diezel (Pittsford, Vt.), freshman Kyle Hajj (Methuen, Mass.) and senior Justin Enright (Hubbardston, Mass.) combined for a season best time of 11:24.42 and finished 13th.

Junior Johanna DeVries (New Braintree, Mass.), junior Natalie Ellard (Rockland, Mass.), junior Shari Rainville (Highgate Center, Vt.) and sophomore Nia Fraser (West Hartford, Conn.) placed 20th in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:58.64.

Prior to New England's, several Chargers set indoor records. Kyle Diezel set the first one of the year at Plymouth State. He won the 400-meter dash with a record time of 51.94 to break the previous record mark of 53.39. At the season's next meet, held at Bowdoin, a pair of records were broken. Hajj raced to a third place finish in the 600-meter run with a record time of 1:27.69 to beat the previous mark by nearly eight seconds. Oligny finished second in the 1000-meter run with a record time of 3:16.26. In the final regular season indoor meet, held at MIT, the Colby-Sawyer women's team set three records. Boyd, Brennan, Oligny and Fairbairn combined for a school record time of 4:30.43 to win the 4x400 relay. Boyd and Oligny also set records in individual events. Boyd placed fifth in the 600-meter run with a record time of 1:47.91. Oligny set a record in the mile with a time of 5:29.84 and won the event.

Both the men's and women's outdoor teams finished as runners-up at the 2018 NAC Championship held at the beautiful Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field.

On the men's side, Colby-Sawyer finished with 182 points to claim second place behind Husson's total of 198. On the women's side, Colby-Sawyer was second with 167 points behind Husson's 207 points.

Each event winner was honored as a 2018 NAC champion, while those finishing either first or second garnered All-Conference awards.

The women had several championship performances throughout the day. Shari Rainville took the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles for the second year in a row with a time of 16.89. Rainville also finished tied for second in the pole vault with a height of 2.73 meters.

Nia Fraser won the long jump, for the second consecutive year, with a distance of 5.01 meters.

Junior Amanda Martin (Amesbury, Mass.) was the top finisher in the triple jump with a distance of 10.46 meters to win the event for the second year in a row. Martin was second in the 400-meter dash at 1:04.18.

A pair of Chargers earned All-Conference accolades in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Alison Fairbairn won the race with a time of 12:57.82, while Amanda Boyd was right behind her in second at 12:58.64.

Emmani Robinson made a clean sweep of the shot put in her four years competing at the NAC Championship. She won the event with a mark of 12.40 meters to give her four medals in four years.

Senior Sarah Redman (Alfred, Maine) represented the Chargers on the All-NAC Sportsmanship Team.

A pair of Charger men came away with victories at the NAC Championship. Kyle Diezel scored first-place points by winning the 400-meter dash with a meet record time of 50.91. He has won the event three years in a row.

Karl Nyholm was the NAC champion in the shot put (15.47 meters) for the third consecutive year.

Sophomore Peter Bakker (Barkhamsted, Conn.) earned a pair of All-Conference honors by finishing in second in the 5000-meter run at 16:32.23 and the 3000-meter steeplechase at 10:16.21.

In the 4x100-meter relay, junior Eric Morin (North Sutton, N.H.), freshman Shawn Spenard (Northwood, N.H.), sophomore Michael Bullen (Franklin, Mass.) and Curtis Warren combined to finish second with a time of 45.21.    

Kyle Hajj finished second in the long jump with a distance of 6.29 meters.

Justin Enright was named to the All-NAC Sportsmanship Team.

In addition to earning All-Conference honors by finishing second in the pole vault with a height of 3.95 meters, Curtis Warren was named the 2018 NAC Men's Track & Field Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Warren was recognized for excelling academically and athletically throughout his undergraduate experience. He has been named to the Dean's List every semester and is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. The senior was honored with the 2018 Colby-Sawyer Senior Scholar-Athlete Award and the 2018 Colby-Sawyer Award. Warren served as the President of the Exercise and Sport Science Majors Club and honed his leadership skills by participating in an Emerging Leaders Program.

Colby-Sawyer sent three individuals and two relay teams to this year's New England Outdoor Championships held at MIT.

Karl Nyholm kicked off the competition for the Chargers with a record setting performance. He broke his previous school record of 47.41 meters in the discus with a new mark of 47.64 meters. He placed sixth out of 25 competitors to earn All-New England honors.

Kyle Diezel competed in a pair of sprint events. In the 400-meter dash, Diezel won his heat and finished seventh overall, out of 31 runners, with a personal best time of 50.30 to earn All-New England honors. In the 200-meter dash, Diezel was third in his heat with a time of 22.84 and finished 24th overall.

Peter Bakker competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He clocked in at 10:25.17 to finish 16th.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Diezel, Michael Bullen, Eric Morin and Shawn Spenard ran to a season best time of 44.56 to finish 17th.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Izzy Diaz (Coopersburg, Pa.), Natalie Ellard, Johanna DeVries and Nia Fraser combined for a time of 54.61 to place 17th.

Earlier in the outdoor season, three other records were broken. On April 7 at Fitchburg State, Amanda Martin beat her previous triple jump school record of 10.64 meters with a new distance of 10.80 meters. Also at Fitchburg State, Karl Nyholm placed third in the hammer with a school record throw of 44.45 meters, breaking the previous record of 41.61 meters set in 2010. In the next meet held at Mount Holyoke, Shari Rainville tied a school record height in the pole vault by achieving 2.80 meters. The mark tied teammate Johanna DeVries who has accomplished the height twice.

At the conclusion of the indoor season, Karl Nyholm earned United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region honors for the third year in a row. He was fourth in the region in the shot put with a distance of 15.81 meters. After the outdoor season, Emmani Robinson garnered All-Region accolades in the shot put for the third consecutive year. She achieved a season best distance of 13.52 meters to rank fourth in New England and 25th in the nation.

The women's outdoor track and field team landed four student-athletes on this year's Winter/Spring NAC All-Academic Team. Natalie Ellard and Amanda Martin were honored for the second year in a row. Ellard is a Sport Management major and Martin is a Nursing major. Lauren Oligny earned a nod to the All-Academic Team as a Biology major. Also earning All-Academic accolades for the first time was Alison Fairbairn, who is an Exercise Science major.

Junior Chase Gendron (Raymond, Maine) and Curtis Warren represented the men's team. Gendron is a Biology major and earned his first All-Academic award. Warren, an Exercise Science major, was honored for the third-straight year.
