Colby-Sawyer Athletics Announces 2020 Senior Awards

NEW LONDON, N.H. – July 22, 2020 – The Colby-Sawyer Athletic Advisory Council announced the winners of the Wynne Jesser McGrew Female Senior Scholar-Athlete, the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete, the Outstanding Male Senior Athlete, and the Outstanding Female Senior Athlete awards in a virtual ceremony Sunday evening.  

The 2020 honorees included Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) of the basketball team who took home the Outstanding Male Senior Athlete Award, while Kailyn Lapham (Medway, Mass.) of the field hockey and lacrosse teams won the Outstanding Female Senior Athlete Award. Alison Fairbairn (Dover, N.H.) of the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams received the Wynne Jesser McGrew Female Senior Scholar-Athlete Award and Cody Wilson (Canyon Dam, Calif.) of the alpine ski team earned the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete award.



Dana Bean of the basketball team received the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award which is given each year to the senior male athlete who has demonstrated outstanding athletic ability over the course of his entire career. The recipient of this award is nominated by a coach and then selected by the Athletic Advisory Council. Nominees must be a member of the senior class. The award is based solely on athletic talent, ability, attitude, performance, and success. It is a token of hard work, good judgment, understanding, and determination. 

Dana, an athletic and skilled 6-foot-8 post player, leaves an indelible mark on the men's basketball program. He was a four-year starter and an extremely rare four-time all-conference performer. Dana, a senior team captain, demonstrated consistent high-end production, averaging 16.4 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game over his four-year career.

In his first season, Dana was named North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Rookie of the Year and an All-NAC Second Team honoree. As a sophomore, Dana garnered All-NAC First Team accolades. In his two seasons in the NAC, Dana earned two Player of the Week awards and four Rookie of the Week honors.

As Colby-Sawyer transitioned to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), Dana kept his impressive career on track. At the conclusion of his junior season, he was recognized as an All-GNAC First Team selection. At year's end, Dana received the Charger Award for Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year.

In his final season, Dana earned a nod to the All-GNAC Second Team after ranking in the top-10 in several categories among conference players.

Dana finished a remarkable career ranked fifth in program history in points with 1,688, second in rebounds with 895, second in blocks with 116, fifth in field goals made with 679 and sixth in free throws made with 327. Dana played and started in 103 of the possible 106 games in his career. He shot an impressive 56.6% from the floor for his career and was never below 54% in a single season.

Kailyn was a defensive force for the Chargers for four years, leading the field hockey and lacrosse teams to some of their most successful seasons in program history.

In field hockey, Kailyn was a four-year starter and a captain during her senior season. Kailyn finished her field hockey career as the all-time leader in defensive saves with eight. She was twice named to the All-GNAC Second Team. She is a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III National Academic Squad honoree and has earned four nods to the GNAC All-Academic Team. Kailyn scored three goals in her career as a defender. She was 2-for-2 in penalty strokes, including one against Anna Maria on senior day to give the Chargers a win in overtime. 

On the lacrosse field, Kailyn was the starting goalkeeper for her final three seasons. She was a team captain as a junior and senior. In 2018, she was the first player in program history to be named Defensive Player of the Year. She also was named to the All-NAC First Team and NAC All-Tournament Team in Colby-Sawyer's final season with the NAC. In 2019, Kailyn landed on the All-GNAC Second Team as the second-best goalkeeper in the league. Kailyn finished her career ranked second in wins with 22 and sixth in saves with 401 despite her final season being cut short after four games.

Alison Fairbairn of the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams earned the Wynne Jesser McGrew Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the graduating female senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Council, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the College.

Alison graduated with a degree in Exercise Science with a 3.81 GPA. Her academic achievements are very impressive. She is a Wesson Honors student, received the Exercise Science Baccalaureate Award and her group won the Exercise Science Capstone Award. She is a four-time GNAC All-Academic honoree and a two-time NAC All-Academic Team member.

Earlier this year, Alison became the first cross country student-athlete to be named CoSIDA Academic All-District and the second track & field honoree in program history.

In addition, Alison has been involved throughout campus and the community. She was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB), the ESS Club and the dance club. She also was a student assistant to the Exercise Science professors, a tutor at the Student Learning Collaborative (SLC) and has volunteered at the Boston Marathon.

Alison's athletics accolades are just as impressive. She competed in every possible season throughout her career as a member of the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams. During her senior year, she was a team captain for each team.

In cross country, she earned all-conference second team honors all four years, helped the team to three conference championships and posted six career top-10 finishes.  

In track & field, Fairbairn is the indoor record holder in the 1000-meter run, 4x800 relay and the distance relay. She helped the Chargers win an outdoor track & field conference championship.

Alison will continue her career after being accepted into the Boston University Physical Therapy program.

Cody Wilson of the alpine skiing team received the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the graduating male senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Council, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the college.

Cody graduated with a degree in Sport Management with an impressive 3.97 GPA. Cody is a Wesson Honors student and a member of Alpha Chi. His group won the Exercise Science Capstone Award for their work on the effects of simulated hypoxic interval training. Cody was a SAAC representative for two years and won the Colby-Sawyer Sophomore Award. He also was named to the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team four times.

When Cody is not competing for the Chargers or hard at work in the classroom, he is a volunteer firefighter back in his hometown in California.

On the hill, Cody was a standout performer for the Chargers for four years competing at the highest level of collegiate skiing against athletes from all three NCAA Divisions. He accumulated 13 top-30 finishes in Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) competition, with a best result of 14th.

His ability on the mountain, work ethic and leadership skills as a captain will leave a lasting impact on the Colby-Sawyer ski program.
