Chargers Spring Season Recaps

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Chargers ended 2021-22 with full competitive seasons, ending the year with four playoff berths, a GNAC Championship and a pair of GNAC Runner Up titles in spring.
 
Baseball: 
Head coach Tom White finally got to finally complete a full season as the head coach of the Colby-Sawyer baseball team as the young Chargers finished 8-29 with a 4-14 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record. The Chargers were a part of the Russmatt Central Florida Invitational this year and picked up an exciting walk off victory against Curry College on March 16th. In the game the Chargers trailed the Colonels 7-6 heading into the final inning, before first year Jesse MacGlashing (Pittsfield, N.H.) and sophomore Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) each had RBI singles to propel the Chargers to the win. Another big win for the Chargers came on April 2nd in game one against Lasell University. The game was an exciting back and forth game between the Lasers and Chargers with the home team getting clutch runs again to pick up the 6-4 win. Sophomore Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) dazzled in six innings with four punchouts with key hits coming from MacGlashing, Matarese and junior Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.) to get the key GNAC victory. Junior Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) had a stellar season for the Chargers with six home runs, 27 RBIs and a .327 batting average. O'Brien was later named to the GNAC All-Conference Third Team. MacGlashing also shined in his first year in New London hitting a team-leading .340 with 20 RBIs and six extra base hits. MacGlashing was also named to the GNAC All-Rookie Team for his outstanding play. On the mound first year Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) led the way with a 4-4 record and a team-leading 48 strikeouts.

Men's Tennis: 
 The Chargers men's tennis team got back to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play for the first time since April 27, 2019. Head coach Barry Schoonmaker led Colby-Sawyer to a 10-10 overall record with a 3-1 GNAC record, which secured the Chargers the second seed in the GNAC tournament. Some of the top matches for Colby-Sawyer this season came at the tail-end of the year first with the Chargers picking up a close 5-4 victory over Regis College on April 23rd. This game showed the true depth of the team as #3 doubles and #3-#6 singles all picked up massive wins with junior Cohl Schusler (Bradford, N.H.) picking up the clinching point on senior day. The Chargers also picked up a 5-1 home win in the GNAC Semifinals over Albertus Magnus College on April 30th. Senior Julius Lowman (Bavaria, Germany) had a stellar comeback in #1 singles storming back from a 3-0 deficit to eventually win by a 6-4, 6-0 final. Colby-Sawyer eventually fell in the GNAC Championship to Eastern Nazarene College. The Chargers had four student-athletes make the GNAC All-Conference Teams as first year Jan Ullmann (Schriesheim, Baden-Wuerrittemberg, Germany) was recognized twice being announced as a GNAC All-Conference First Team member while also being named the 2022 GNAC Rookie of the Year. Lowman was awarded First Team All-Conference honors, first year Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.) was a member of the GNAC All-Conference Second Team, while senior Charlie Graffius (Portland, Maine) was a member of the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
Men's Volleyball: 
 The Chargers men's volleyball team had another building year finishing the season 5-19 with a 2-14 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record. Colby-Sawyer picked up its first GNAC conference win on March 12th at Dean College by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-10, 26-24) final. Senior Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the way with 12 kills, 10 digs and a service ace. Senior Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) added 10 kills and five digs. The second conference win for the Chargers came at home on March 31st with another 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-12) win over Dean College. Plagata had another big game with 12 kills, while first year Lucas Lizotte (Hampstead, N.H.) added 31 assists, 11 digs and five service aces. Plagata was later named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team finishing the year with 178 kills, 133 digs, and 21 service aces. On April 5th David Starin was announced as the new men's and women's volleyball coach at Colby-Sawyer and will take over the program next season.
 
Outdoor Track & Field: 
 Both the men's and women's outdoor track and field teams got to compete in eight meets in 2022 including a trip to the NCAA Division III Regionals at Williams College on May 7th. The Chargers hosted the GNAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 1st with the men's team winning the GNAC Championship, while the women's team were the GNAC Runner Ups.
On the men's side senior Alex Kusnarowis (Concord, N.H.) earned first place in three of his events. During the discus throw, the senior threw for 37.35 meters, collecting a new personal record. Then, in the shot-put event, Kusnarowis threw for 11.90 meters. Finally, the New Hampshire native placed first in the men's hammer throw with a 29.20-meter throw.  Taking the win in the men's pole vault event as well as collecting an impressive personal record was first-year Drew Doughty (Bedford, N.H.). Doughty vaulted for 3.70 meters to earn the event victory with teammate Bryce Carlson (Hampton Falls, N.H.) following behind in second place with a 3.35-meter vault. Earning a podium spot in the high jump was junior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) with a 1.80-meter jump and a third-place finish. First-year Dylan Flewelling finished the 10k in 36:23.82 earning a second-place finish while three other Chargers occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth spots. Then, Flewelling collected his second podium spot in the 3000-meter steeple with a finishing time of 10:54.91 for second place. The team of junior Dean Miller (Andover, Mass.), sophomore Joseph Branchaud, first-year Chase Adams, and first-year Jordan Kofos collectively won the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 43.83. Adams continued the day with two event victories in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. Jacob Nichol (Concord, N.H.) followed behind Adams in the 110-meter hurdles with a third-place finish and a new personal record of 17.23 and another third-place finish in the 400 meters. Junior Terrance Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, GA) battled it out with his opponents as he took first place in the 800-meter race, crossing the line .01 of a second faster than the Regis runner. Miller added points to the total team score during the 200-meter race with a third-place finish while first-year Haven Deschenes (Peterborough, N.H.) finished third in the 5k. Colby-Sawyer took first place in the 4x400 relay for ten extra team points with Harvey, Adams, Goyette and Nichol finishing in 3:35.99 while placing second in the 4x800. This event's team included senior Brenden Sullivan, first-years Martin Steucek, Daniel Magill, and Achius Wolfley.
 
On the women's side, finishing in first place during her first triple jump appearance of the season was sophomore Ashley Keleher (Mashpee, Mass.) with a 10.53-meter jump. Sophomore Anna Bieszaczad (Grantham, N.H.) followed in second place with a 9.50-meter jump.
Junior Laurel Blackman (Fairfield, Conn.) led the pole-vaulting event with a 2.90-meter vault to earn first place. Junior Shannon O'Connell was named both the 5k and 10k champion as she finished in first place with a time of 19:26.62 in the 5k and 44:35.69 in the 10k. Following O'Connell in the 10k race was first-year Heather Hanson (Marstons Mills, Mass.) with first-year Samantha Carus (Brownfield, Maine) coming in third to sweep all three podium spots of the event. Carus placed second in the 10k with a time of 19:27.69. Keleher collected her second event victory of the day in the women's 100-meter dash, crossing the line at 12.60 while also placing second in the 200-meter race. Hanson also earned her second podium spot, this time in the 3000-meter steeple, in her first collegiate outdoor meet appearance. First-year Tessa Millette (Barrington, N.H.) placed third in the women's 1500 meter with a finishing time of 5:05.98 and a new personal record. Grace Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) contributed with a third-place finish in the 800-meter race with a final time of 2:32.15. The team of Walsh, sophomore Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine), first-year Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.), and Kara Keiper (Peterborough, N.H.) placed second in the 4x400 meter relay with a finishing time of 4:32.03. Quinn Aldrich (New Ipswich, N.H.), Hanson, first-year Courtney Larson (Auburn, Maine), and graduate student Julia Lanctot (Sandown, N.H.) also placed second, but in the 4x800 meter relay.
 
After competing in the conference championship, nine members of the Colby-Sawyer track & field team got to compete in the NCAA Division III Regionals. Starting the big day for the Chargers with the first event was sophomore Ashley Keleher (Mashpee, Mass.) in the 100-meter dash. The record holder placed sixth in the first heat of the preliminaries with a final time of 12.81. Competing in the 10,000 meter race was junior Shannon O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.), and first year Samantha Carus (Brownfield, Maine). The rookie of the two placed 14th of 29, crossing the line almost a minute and a half quicker than her previous record with a new 39:28.29 finishing time. The two-time event winner in the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Outdoor Championship (O'Connell), finished in 20th place with a final time of 40:33.43. The men's 800-meter GNAC Champion, junior Terrence Harvey Jr. (Atlanta, GA), along with 4x100 meter GNAC Champions junior Dean Miller (Andover, Mass.), and first-year Jordan Kofos (Kittery, Maine), joined junior Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) in the second-place finish within their section of the men's 4x400 meter relay. Their finishing time was 3:39.22. The women's 4x800 relay team consisted of first-years Tessa Millette (Barrington, N.H.), and Heather Hanson (Marstons Mills, Mass.), as well as Carus and O'Connell. The group finished in 10:55.79 for a sixth-place finish in the first section of the event. Boone rounded out the day, competing in the men's high jump event.
 
Women's Lacrosse: 
 Head coach Emily Dewdney kept making history in 2021-22 as the Chargers women's lacrosse team got off to the best start in program history winning their first eight games of the season. Colby-Sawyer ended the year with 11-6 overall record and an 8-5 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record. The Chargers picked up a big win on March 2nd with a 15-8 win at Lasell University. First year Heather Hanson (Marston Mills, Mass.) continued to shine with four goals, four assists, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass.) also had her best game of the season with four goals, three caused turnovers and 10 draw controls. The other big win on the year came on April 20th as the Chargers defeated inner-state rival New England College by a 15-6 final on Sally Shaw Veitch Field. Hanson again led the way with five goals, an assist and four ground balls, while junior Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) finished with three goals and four ground balls. Colby-Sawyer fell in the first round of the GNAC Tournament to Johnson & Wales to end the 2022 campaign.  The Chargers women's lacrosse teams' future is bright as six first years started games for Colby-Sawyer with Hanson, first year Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) and first year Sophia Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) all making GNAC All-Conference Teams. Hanson was honored three times being named the GNAC Rookie of the Year, while making the GNAC All-Conference First Team and GNAC All-Rookie Team after a 49 goal, 26 assist and 86 ground ball season. The 86 ground balls that Hanson collected is a new program record and ranked first in the GNAC in 2022. Himes was both a GNAC All-Conference Second Team member while also securing a spot on the GNAC All-Rookie Team. The converted goalkeeper played outstanding as a defender collecting 45 ground balls and causing 15 turnovers for the Chargers. Junior Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) made the GNAC All-Conference Third Team as the two-sport athlete scored 42 goals and dished out 20 assists. Kuhltahu was named to the GNAC All-Rookie Team after causing a team-leading 33 turnovers and scoring 32 goals. Marquis was also named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
 
THANK YOU, SENIORS,
 Starting with the baseball team, Jackson Parmentier (Higganum, Conn.), Jonathan Martinez and Kaelen Close finally got to play a full 37 game schedule again to end their career in New London.
 
Seniors Julius Lowman (Schriesheim, Baden-Wuerrittemberg, Germany) and Charlie Graffius (Portland, Maine) each were a big part for the Chargers men's tennis best finish in the GNAC in program history. Both seniors each made GNAC All-Conference Teams.

The men's volleyball program saw its first ever four-year student-athlete graduate as Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) ended his final season in New London with 110 kills. Graduate student Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.) also will be leaving the program after a great final season. Seniors Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) and AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) will both be returning for the fifth year.
 
For Track & Field seniors Alex Kusnarowis (Concord, N.H.), Spencer McClary (South Burlington, Vt.), Jacob Nichol (Concord, N.H.), Brendan Sullivan (Wellesley, Mass.), Jacob Walker (Guilford, Conn.), Ashley Bosworth (Pepperell, Mass.), and graduate students Julia Lanctot (Sandown, N.H.) and Chelsea Perry (Oakland, Maine) each finished off a success spring season either winning a GNAC Championship or being a GNAC Runner Up.

Finally for the women's lacrosse team seniors Caroline Tompkins (Marblehead, Mass) and Camryn Bergeron (Swanton, Vt.) each helped lead the Chargers to the second best finish in program history.
